& Ethnographic Research: Afro-Cuban Food
Natalia Bolívar Aróstegui / Carmen González
This project transcends the conventional cookbook category to establish itself as a profound ethnographic research on ritual nourishment. The design challenge lay in structuring hybrid content that navigates between essayistic prose on the Reglas de Palo Monte and the Abakuá Society, the mythical narrative of the Ifá Pattakíes, and the strict hierarchies of menus for each Orisha.
The visual identity of the work is defined by its exterior, for which I created a cover featuring an exquisite composition of offerings. This still life is not decorative but symbolic; it captures the essence of Cuban syncretism and acts as a visual gateway to the book's cultural richness.
Inside, the editorial work demanded a precise information architecture to differentiate the various reading levels: from the solemnity of religious prohibitions and "Addimú" to the warmth of oral memory. I opted for a layout that respects the academic rigor of the research, ensuring that sacred history and culinary tradition coexist in perfect harmony.
