Tato Quiñónes
Art Direction & Editorial Success: Asere Núncue Itiá

This project represents one of the greatest editorial successes of my career, having been awarded the Premio del Lector (Grand Prize) for the best-selling book of the year in Cuba. The challenge was monumental: transforming Tato Quiñones' rigorous historical and anthropological research on the Abacuá secret brotherhoods into a coveted object for the general public.

The art direction strategy moved away from cold academicism. I designed a magnetic cover that captures the solemnity and mystery of this Carabalí-origin society, unique in the world outside of Africa. Inside, the layout organizes 19th-century documents and ritual language transcriptions with a clear hierarchy, making a complex reading accessible. The commercial success of the work proves that impeccable design, which respects the "symbolic force" of the content, is capable of connecting high culture with the massive interest of readers.
